OKEH RECORDS

ONE OF THE EARLIEST LABELS TO RECORD BLACK MUSIC. IN 1920, THE LABEL LAUNCHED THE RACE MUSIC RECORDING INDUSTRY. THE RECORDING OF MAMIE SMITH'S “CRAZY BLUES,” A RECORD THAT SOLD MORE THAN A MILLION COPIES AND ILLUSTRATED THE COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC.

W.C. Handy, often called the "Father of the Blues," transformed the soundscape of American music by popularizing blues music in the early 20th century. His groundbreaking compositions, such as "St. Louis Blues" and "Memphis Blues," captured the raw emotion and unique rhythms of African American musical traditions, forever changing the landscape of popular music.
